Interchangeable HOME Signs

HOME Sign available for purchase HERE

This man of mine. He’s a funny one. We joked for days that his head would explode from all the views and that he was “Instafamous”! Ha! Really though, he just likes to make people smile… so bless him. And if his video inspires someone to make this awesome sign, PERFECT!

Every year, the ladies in my church have what we call a Super Saturday. We craft things for our homes, as well as create gifts for others for Christmas. A year ago (maybe 2, who knows), we did a HOME sign with a cute green wreath as the O. The wreath definitely had a spring feel to it. It had a few of us thinking that would it be nice to have a sign that we could use for EVERY season.

HOME Sign available for purchase HERE.

I won’t lie… this sign was a BEAST to make. Each piece was hand cut by me on the scroll saw and then hand painted… every last dot. It was quite the project. A whole lot of love and time went in to this baby.

I used 3 (Common: 1/2-in x 4-in x 2-ft; Actual: 0.5-in x 3.5-in x 2-ft) Poplar Board from Lowes and cut them to 20 inches long each. The 2 pieces on the back were cut from 1 (Common: 1/4-in x 2-in x 2-ft; Actual: 0.25-in x 1.5-in x 2-ft) Poplar Board. I made them long enough to go across all three boards at 9 inches each. I left a slight gap in between the boards before gluing (and nailing) them together.

The sign dimensions ended up being 10.5 inches x 20 inches.

Once the glue dried, I used my go-to stain color, Provincial (Minwax). Its my favorite. But really, you can stain and/or paint it whatever color you like. I did a coat of white paint over the stain and distressed it just a bit…. I wanted a neutral sign that wouldn’t clash with the seasonal pieces. But you do you! You can do whatever color/stain you like – BE CREATIVE!

I created a stencil using my Silhouette to paint the lettering for the sign. It takes more time than just using vinyl as the lettering, but I love the painted look.

For the pieces, I traced different seasonal images and cut them on my scroll saw. I decided to go very simple with the painting – solid background with dots in a complementing color. It was a labor of love, but I love how each piece turned out!

It was a big hit with friends and family. They even had suggestions for more pieces! I ended up adding a couple pieces for the sign – a TURKEY for Thanksgiving and a BALLOON for birthdays!

Its so stinking cute and I love that it can be used YEAR ROUND!

    I want one of these!

    Suggestion… ❄ Snowflake For January
    Option for specialized pieces, maybe?
Mother’s day, Father’s day, seasons, peace sign, smiley face…

This is a fantastic idea! Love it!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

That is a great idea! I love snowflakes (not that I see any in Florida, but I still love them! ha!)! Mother’s Day – flower, maybe? Father’s Day – a tie? Hmmmm…. Lot’s to think about!

      • Samantha Delaney says:

I absolutely loved your ideas! Are you from Jacksonville? I saw your family picture and Madeline did our family pictures too. Very beautiful picture. I would love your Etsy address when it gets up and running. Thanks a bunch!

        • Sarah Epperson says:

Yes, we are in Orange Park. Madeline is the best! Did you see that she just had a baby? So exciting! And thank you!

We are opening up shop at the end of the month. If you’d like to be notified when they are available for purchase, please provide your email here: https://forms.gle/WJdtd1yv3QG7Z87U8

Love this project….I also do a craft project with the ladies of our church. Would you be able to share some simpler past projects. I am out of ideas.

    • Sarah Epperson says:

I’ve got tons of ideas! Let me find the sign that got us thinking and I’ll snap a picture of it for you. It was an easy project that turned out so great! It was a big hit.

      • Corinne says:

Awesome. I have a hard time coming up with projects for the church ladies. Not everyone is a natural craft maker. What I think is simple doesn’t always work that way. I appreciate your willingness to share.

        • Sarah Epperson says:

Its true! One year, I did a lot of leg work beforehand for a HOME sign by cutting the boards and then sanding and staining them. I cut HOME (minus the O) out of vinyl and hand them transfer the word onto their sign and then go over their sign (and vinyl lettering) with chalk paint. Once it was dry, they peel off the letters, revealing the stain underneath. Then they took a small wreath (the O) and hot glued greenery into it before gluing the wreath in the spot for the O. They turned out really cute, even if the person didn’t feel like they were a “crafter”.

  3. Kellie says:

I would love to buy one! Also like the suggestion from Rebecca Myers for more pieces. You’re onto something here…. you could make a lot of money with these. So cute! Please contact me about purchasing one.

  4. Susie says:

Add me to the list! I would definitely buy one or two! Great gift ideas (I’m a realtor) and could give these as closing gifts!

  5. Dianne Brown says:

If you make more of these signs I would love to buy one if price is reasonable. Please contact me at dpbrn@yahoo.com or text me at 407-383-5160.
Thanks, I absolutely love this sign!!! Great job!!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Thank you. My husband and I were chatting this morning on how we can make more for people that are interested – painted signs & pieces as well as unfinished kits. <3 It in the works!

  6. Ursula says:

Love it! Please sign me up to your waiting list once you make some more for sale 😍. Will love to buy one. Great idea!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

I will definitely put you on the list. My husband and I were chatting this morning on how we can make more for people that are interested – painted signs & pieces as well as unfinished kits. <3

  7. Crystal says:

I could totally see this on Etsy. I’d also love one of these. I don’t have any tools to be able to make myself. I’d imagine cost wise you’d sell the painted welcome board with maybe 4 seasonal attachments (maybe flower, sun, pumpkin/orange leaf, and snowflake) for $50-$100, then maybe each additional holiday attachment being $5-$10? Plus shipping.

  8. Celeste Jackson-Lintz says:

Just like everyone else, I’m in when you’re ready to sell! I’m having my house built right now in Colorado and this would be perfect in my entryway. You definitely need a snowflake for those of us who had snow fall on May 21st this year!! You did a great job and your hubby sells it well. I’m pinning this to my page!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Thanks so much. Hoping to put several together this month and start my very own Etsy page. πŸ™‚

  9. Ashley June says:

Saw this on pinterest. I hope you get these on Etsy soon. You’re gonna make a killing. I definitely want to order 3!!!

  10. Liz Langston says:

This is fantastic. I have seen some for sale from Miss Cayce’s out of Texas for $50. Not sure their size compared to yours or how many pieces offered that they sold separately. I may have to invest in a scroll saw. Thanks!

  11. Sonia Vera says:

This is awesome!! I would love to purchase one too! Love the flower and tie idea! Put me on the list please!!

  12. Pam says:

I’m jumping onboard the train!!! The sign is super cute and I have the perfect spot for it!! Add me to the list!

  13. Diana says:

I love this idea, I’m making one as a gift. How did you nail them together? And what size nail did you use? Thank you for sharing this idea and process!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

yay! I’m so glad!! I first wood glued the boards to the back and then used my Hitachi nailer to secure it. I believe I used 5/8ths of an inch. It was the smallest nail they had.

  14. Evelyn says:

Hi Sarah! I love the sign, so creative and useful! I would also love to purchase one if you ever decided to make more and sell them. Just moved into our first home and this would be the icing on the cake. Thank you for sharing! ❀️

    ~ Evelyn

  15. Aimy says:

Me too! I love this! You could even sell the interchangeable shapes separately as add ons. Do a certain set that comes with the sign and have add on packs for sale. You need one for New Years like two Champaign flutes or a black balloon with gold confetti specks maybe.

  16. Meredith says:

It’s July 1 and my fingers are crossed. Please let me know when these signs are available. Brilliant!!

  17. Michelle Hill says:

I’d love to purchase this sign as well. Please add me to your list. May buy more than 1, depending on price.

  18. Debbie says:

Would like to know when you get up and going on etsy too.

BTW Hobby Lobby and Michael’s have different unfinished holiday shapes that might work for you.

  19. Ryan Kohler says:

This is AMAZING!! Please let me know how I can purchase. Do you have your Etsy shop set up yet? Would love to follow and be notified when it’s available.
    Thanks!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

End of July. πŸ™‚ I will most definitely follow up with everyone that has expressed interest on here. πŸ™‚

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Hi Nicole! We will be opening the shop at the end of July. (or at least that’s the plan!) We are in the process of cutting all the interchangeable pieces.

  20. Amanda says:

The flag works for Independence Day and Memorial Day, so you don’t need anything like fireworks for those holidays. I feel like the only holiday you might be missing is New Year’s. Fireworks would be cool if possible. Or maybe confetti. I love this idea and I love crafting but I’d totally just buy one from you. Your pieces are amazing and I don’t think I could even make them that nice.

  21. Lindsey Ford says:

❀️ this and need one too!! Add me to your list πŸ™‚
Hope your prepping cause you’re gonna be BUSY!! ❀️

    • Sarah Epperson says:

HAHAHA! Yes! We are working hard to get the pieces ready for opening the shop. Those are the most time consuming part of the process. Fingers crossed we will be ready. Hoping to open the shop with pieces for 50 signs… and then I’ll just make the signs as the orders come in.

  22. Nicole Potter says:

I’m very interested in buying this sign. I also have an idea to add for the interchangeable pieces.. since I live in the state of Michigan you could make the shape of the state to replace the β€œo” and I’m sure other people would like their state too! Please let me know when you are up and running on Etsy 😊 Thanks Sarah! Hope to hear from you soon!!

  23. Erin Stewart says:

I NEED this in my life! 😬 like everyone else, please let me know when you are selling them! Thanks.

  24. Monica Hennessy says:

Please add me to email list. This is darling. BTW, your husband’s sense of humor re the kids reminds me of mine. Right now, they are half way through college, and his mantra is: We gotta get these kids off the payroll!

  25. Lisa Radcliff says:

Looks like you have a business on your hands! Love these interchangeable Home signs and would be interested in one as well. Hope you are able to keep up with what looks like some awesome demand!😊

      • Terri Edwards says:

This teacher would love one that says, β€œWelcome to My Class” (sun, Apple, pumpkin, Turkey, Santa, tree, heart, shamrock, cloud, flower, snowcone, flag)

        • Sarah Epperson says:

Love Love Love! I’m a teacher, too! I think we are going to make that an option when we open the shop. Please review the details of the sign & provide email address if you would like to order one when we *OFFICIALLY* open up shop! (fingers crossed for the end of July)

  31. Marc says:

I am a retired (disabled) Navy Vet who served in the Gulf War and I think for Veterans and Memorial Day you could maybe have a POW/PIA symbol? Just a thought! Please let me know when it is available for purchase

  32. April Glauner says:

Just sent in my email!!!! I know myself, as well as 5 other people would LOVE to buy this. I look forward to hearing from you! Cannot wait!

  33. Holly Williams says:

Do you think you’ll sell pieces separately? I actually have a sign for this, but always looking for more pieces!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Yes! We plan to, its in the works – but not sure when. Hopefully in August – pieces (finished & unfinished), kits (finished and unfinished)

  34. Margaret Hester Latham says:

I have signed up for notice when your ETSY shop is open and have a question you may have been asked before, but I didn’t see it in the above comments. Old eyes, I guess! Anyway, you have listed the whole set that will be sold, but will you be offering the interchangeable shapes separately as well. I have a sign already, but love, love, love your shapes. The ones I have are truely not as colorful and small in size. Yours is perfect is size. Just wondering. I am hoping to hear back from you regarding my inquiry. Thank you!

  35. Danielle says:

Love these! I signed up to get an email when these are available. I have a couple suggestions for the magnets.
Snowflake or snowman to represent winter or January
    Flower for spring

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Once we get rolling with the shop, we hope to be able to do add-ons. There have been so many great ideas! The possibilities are endless! I think I’m going to post a Poll on the page and have people vote and suggest different pieces so that we know where to start with these wonderful suggestions. But yes, thank you! I really do love that idea and I think a paw print would be SUPER cute!

  36. Lauren says:

What are the approximate dimensions of the shapes you cut out? I see they are a quarter inch thick … How tall are they? Thanks so much. Super cute!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Hey Elizabeth! Sorry for the delay. Returned from camp yesterday and needed a day to recover – LOL! Once we get rolling with the shop, we hope to be able to do add-ons. There have been so many great ideas! The possibilities are endless! I think I’m going to post a Poll on the page and have people vote and suggest different pieces so that we know where to start with these wonderful suggestions. But yes, thank you! 37. Apryl Clement says:

So I submitted my email address already, but quick question. I love all the monthly change outs, When I order one can I request others also. I have been looking to get something like this but I was 12 change outs. I already know what the other ones would be.

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Hi Apryl! Once we get rolling with the shop, we hope to be able to do add-ons. There have been so many great ideas! The possibilities are endless! 39. Susan says:

I love this and would be interested in ordering. My question is : I am single and would love the sign to say Welcome to my home” instead of our home. Is that possible?

  40. Jenny Guth says:

    Great sign, love it!

Thoughts for other attachments to the HOME sign.
    – Apple on stack of books for back to school
    – Snowflake or Snowman for winter
    – Sailboat or Boat Steering Wheel for lake homes
    – Brown Bear Or Deer for cabins

Let me know when they are for sale. πŸ™‚

  41. Megan says:

Would you make your seasonal pieces available for sale?? My husband made me a sign and I love your pieces and I would not do them any justice!

    • Sarah Epperson says:

Hey Karen! We will be restocking the shop with 60 signs on either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. To be added to the Home Sign Restock list (and to receive notifications on pieces that we are adding to the shop, fill out the google doc form). Link Below:
